Developer infrastructure is where per-seat and usage pricing collide. An editor or a CI service charges per developer; a hosting platform, a CDN, or an error tracker charges for what you consume — builds, bandwidth, events, function invocations. The bill for the same team can look completely different depending on which model dominates your stack.

Where the surprise costs live

Bandwidth and egress. Hosting platforms advertise a generous request or build allowance and meter bandwidth separately, often at a rate that dwarfs the base plan once a site gets traffic or serves large assets. This is the line that turns a $20 plan into a $200 one.

Seats you didn't mean to buy. Per-developer tools bill on everyone with access, including the contractor who logged in once and the manager who never opens it. Check whether inactive seats are billed and whether there's a viewer or guest tier.

The jump to the "Team" or "Business" tier. SSO, audit logs, longer log retention, and role-based access are almost always gated to a plan that costs several times the entry tier. If your company requires SSO, that's your real starting price — compare there, not at the advertised entry point.

How to compare two tools here

Separate the fixed cost (seats × per-seat price at the tier you actually need) from the variable cost (your monthly build minutes, bandwidth, events, or invocations × the overage rate). Add them, and check what happens at 2x your current usage — the tool that's cheaper today isn't always the one that scales cheaply.
